Artist Statement
Having just returned from three months sailing in the Caribbean Islands, one of our favourite places was the lush and jungly Dominica.
Painting on wood rather than canvas, Karo’s compositions embody the solidity and rusticity of shopfront signage and hand-painted wooden houses and boats, delightfully faded and weathered from the sun and the sea.
Compositional elements of Renaissance portrature, characters real or imagined are framed in breezy elements
“Island Life” is a series that explores the richness, vibrancy and boldness of Caribbean colour. “an inate sense of colour and pattern is everywhere, it comes from a rich cross-fertilisation of African roots, Carib indian tribal symbolism, rhythm, and colour as a sense of representation and national pride. Colour is an essential part of everyday life here.”
